Lady's Story

Hi everyone! I said in my reply to the topic if favorite pet names that one of my favorite names for a dog is Lady. I also said that I would explain why. Well, here’s the story or should I say tail!

First of all, I had a very special dog named Lady when I was a child. Lady was a Brittney Spaniel. She was brown, black and white. She came to us abandoned and abused. My Mom found her in the park. We knew she was abused because that’s what the vet told us when we took her for her first check up. We also noticed signs on our own. For one thing, Lady wouldn’t go near my Dad and my Dad never hurt anyone. For another, she was very weary around strange adults.

The way we figured out her name was funny! I was the one to actually figure it out. One day, I was going through some Disney videos of mine, looking for The Little Mermaid. I started saying titles aloud without realizing it. When I got to “Lady and the Tramp” Lady barked. I said ‘Lady again and sure enough, she barked again. I asked her if she liked the name Lady and she barked a third time and started wagging her tail.

Regardless of this, Lady never displayed any aggressive behavior or fear towards any of us. She and I were especially close. When I first came home, I had a lot of tubes and machines attached to me due to being born early. When Lady would come and lay next to my crib, she stepped over the tubing very carefully. IT was like she knew it needed to be treated delicately. She also never bit any of it or tried to play with it. Once she was comfortable, she wouldn’t move from next to me unless she had to.

As I grew and things in my Ohana started falling apart, Lady was the one main friend I could count on. She never gave me any grief or any problems. She just gave me unconditional love.

After my Dad left, Lady became my protector. She would often sleep in front of my door at night, especially if my mother went out partying and would come home drunk. She never let her in until the morning and my Mom was semi sober.

I remember one day, I came home from school and Lady greeted me at the door like always. But as I went to enter the house, she stood in front of me and wouldn’t let me pass. I thought she wanted attention, so I explained to her that once we got inside, I would play with her. Still, she wouldn’t move. I tried to take a step forward and she blocked me. She then did something she had never done before. She went forward before coming to stand next to me on my right. She then raised her head as though she wanted me to pet her. I did so and was surprised when she started walking a little ways in front of me as though she wanted me to follow her. It wasn’t until we had walked into the house and I had shut the door did I realize what she was doing. Apparently, my Mom had rearranged the furniture while I was at school. Lady guided me around the rearranged couches and wouldn’t leave my side until I was safely sitting down on the couch. I praised her and thanked her after I realized what she had done. She was never trained to do that.

Lady was truly a Godsend. I could tell her anything and I knew she was listening and really cared. Lady was to me like Dinah was for Alice in Disney’s AIW. She was faithful, kind and very loyal.

There was only one time Lady ever growled at anyone. She did it out of protection for me. My Mom was mad about something and was yelling at me as usual. She went to hit me and Lady went nuts! She growled at her and got in front of me. Needless to say, her attempt worked and Mom thought twice about hitting me that time.

We would also watch TV Together. The first time I watched “Lady and the Tramp” Lady was right there with me. She laid down and got comfortable next to me. I think she thought the movie was about her! GOL!

The reason was, whenever anyone in the movie would say Lady, her ears perked up and she looked around as though trying to figure out what they wanted.

The night I left to go to my Dad’s, Lady started acting strange. I could tell she didn’t want me to leave.

I petted her for the last time for the time being and told her I loved her. I explained I would be safe now and she seemed to understand.

Despite this, I still missed her greatly when I moved in with my Dad. However, when I returned for a visit, she was very happy to see me.

Lady died of cancer when I was fourteen years old. I miss her a lot, but I know she’s with the Father now. I loved her immensely and I will never forget what she did for me.

Well I hope everyone enjoyed listening to that little tale or maybe I should say tail. GOL! I enjoyed telling it. Lady was truly a dog I will never forget anytime soon.

Aw, what a good sweet doggie. I love animals and want a dog so bad but our apartment won't let us have one. Lady sounds like she'd be a great guide dog if they let her in. My husband is suposedlygetting a guide dog. We'll see.

she sounds adorable. did she have short or long fur? how about the tail did it curl up over the back or hang down?

we just got a puppy which is a labra-doodle. that is a labradoor crossed with a poodle. talk about adorable. she has the floppy lab ears peared with a cute pointy poodle face. kind of looks like a little girl with pig tails. her coat is all poodle fluffy and curly. she has the poodle tail too. kind of ratlike and it has weirdly enough straight retriever fur on it. she's what they call an appricot color which is blondish i am told. a friend says she looks like my daughter's guide dog if she could go get a perm.

Hi! I'm so sorry it took me so long to reply to your question! Lady's fur was short and she had a curl up tail.

That story brought tears to my eyes. It's the kind of thing I think everyone should read and I really hope you publish your story once it's completed. Talk about an inspiration! I especially was amazed about how she guided you around furniture etc. I'm just so sorry that she died of cancer.

Aw, thanks. That means a lot. The story will be slightly fictitious with different names for the Human characters, but everything else will be the same.
